Question:
In the UK will it be Labour vs Conservative forever?
2009-06-16 10:32:59 UTC
There doesn't seem to be any break in the duopoly. Even though people dislike the Tories, they still aim to vote for them in the next election as they dislike them less than Labour, and FPTP makes it unlikely that their vote will make any difference in voting in another party. So it goes back and forth between two parties that have been discredited many times before.

We all hate Labour now, but just wait until the Conservatives run out of ideas and become unpopular (and it will happen, probably sooner than most people think), will they just go back to Labour again?

People feel safe with the Lib/Lab/Con lot for some reason. Goodness knows why people can't take a little risk and try voting for the others. UKIP did great in the Euros the other week, because of mainly 'protest votes'. But, come the general election, they'll all go scurrying back to their old safety zones. Nothing ever changes, people really annoy me.

Labour are clueless! By the way you might want to change your mistake on the first line. You've not been paying attention to the political scene at all because otherwise you'd know he wants to do nothing of the sort (EU). The tories want to stay in the EU but distance our country from the EU's politics and regain more control, which is how it should be and most people want less to do or even nothing to do with the EU nowadays. The reason for this is that people see it for what it is. Even if we did completely pull out of the EU we wouldn't become any weaker (I don't know the logic behind that comment). We put more wealth into the EU than almost every country (I think first or second) and what do we get in return? very little of benefit. What we get from the EU: - A fair trading system - Unnecessary over regulation and bureaucracy, which smothers our business thus decreasing our wealth a great deal considering 70 odd per cent of our regulations are EU and rather more imposed than you think. We do not get: - An equal enough share of influence rather having to fight for it. - Security. The British forces does almost everything for the EU and are more than capable of looking after ourselves if we had the money to spend on them, but of course we spend that on things like Spain's bull fighting etc because of the EU. We just don't get enough out the EU to make it beneficial in any way. It should only be an economic community not a political one. That's what Britain signed on for. There is nothing wrong with fox hunting and it shouldn't have been banned, so long as it is only when the population grows too dense - controlling the population and protecting livestock - thus I would have proposed certain regulations for it not an outright ban. The population often does need to be controlled and you'll find that the fox will die much quicker if the dogs get it rather than beeing shot by something like a gun, which will cause it to bleed to death unless you are a world class marksman and even then there is no garrantee you hit the right spots to make an instant kill. It is also a tradition, not old school. I should also say that I am not actually into fox hunting myself though I've never tried it. The UK, I think you'll find, is always advanced and modern just over the past decade or so we've given people influence and power that neither understand the importance of keeping our traditions and culture, nor know how to marry it with modern advances such has been the case throughout history most notable it could be said during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. All that said, even if you disagree with me on every point, if you intend on voting labour after they have spent the last twelve or something years bringing this country to its knees then you are an intellectually bankrupt fool and my advice would be to stay at home on election day.

yes this country has been stuck in a 2 party system for over 100 years - why change now. At first it was Tory the Liberal back and forth until about 100 years ago when labour surfaced. The displaces Liberals and it was just Labour and Tory back and forth and has been since the only way it can ever change is if it becomes Tory and Lib Dem back and forth [i say tory because i feel it is unlikely lib dem will displace tory it is more likely they will displace labour - and i say that as a labour supporter myself] There will never be a race between 3 parties it will always be a back and forth thing between 2 parties - just look at history and you will find your answer.

Looks very much like we're stuck with the present duopoly because our voting method at General Elections here in UK is first past the post and winner takes all.

The PR (Proportional Representation) method of voting might see other parties in Parliament, but not necessarily in Government.

We might be fed up with Labour now, but a year after the election of 2010, we'll probably be just as fed up with the Tories.

The people are never satisfied - I mean, just how many cream buns can a person eat before becoming quite sick?

i have a vibe that the euro elections were just a taste of things to come and that smaller parties will make huge inroads at the next general elections.

people are disgusted by recent revalations about expenses, war and recession isn't helping much and the virtual meltdown of our current government is making the people feel that the time has come for change.

not just change to the conservatives or even to lib dem but to the smaller parties that seem to have policies closer to the peoples hearts.

my view is that there may possibly have to be a coalition government to run the country as the vote is going to be so varied and no-one will get the overall majority.

Yes, that is the way it goes, and

the way it will (unfortunately) always go me thinks.

Mind you, *when* the Conservatives bugger up, people will

remember how bad Labour were, and how

bad the Torries are, and may hopefully

vote in the BNP

I'm really hoping this is it for New Labour that this will be the last time they ever get to power and they will start to decline.

I'd much rather it was Conservative vs Lib Dem and I'd like to see UKIP become a big player.

Most likely, I can't see it ever changing. Labour, conservatives and lib dems are always top 3!

I don't really want conservatives to win the next general election though....

I think it's probably going to be going back and forth like that in most western nations. Philosophically, those are the two dominant forces in our politics. The debate's been going on for over 100 years and I don't see it ending any time soon.
