Question:
Why do Americans think 1950's USA was such a wonderful place?
2010-04-13 09:36:21 UTC
You mean before the Civil rights movement, the Equal Pay Act for women the legislation protecting children from sexual abuse and the days long before Human Rights.

The days when it was legal for a man to beat his wife and children.

The days when children wandered off unsupervised.

The days before health warnings on cigarettes and alcohol, the days before expiration dates on food, the days before bike helmet and seat belt laws.

The days when homosexuals were locked up for engaging in consensual sex.

The days when corporal punishment was commonplace in schools.

The days when bullying was not only a fact of life but considered a 'right of passage'.

The days when persons in authority were obeyed without question.

The days when all fit young men were forced to do military service...

The days when racial segregation was very common and heavily enforced

The days of the Cold War, when there were planes constantly patrolling the skies armed with nuclear bombs, ready to drop them at a moment's notice.

The days when abortion was illegal and young girls died from sticking broken glass bottles up themselves.

The days when children were forced into reciting the pledge of allegiance and having to engage in school prayer.

The days when PE was compolsory and tyrant teachers could mock and degrade students and then force them to have showers after PE.

I could go on and on.............

i think these feminists are so full of ****...

They demand to be equal to men in money, but they don't demand to have to sign uip for selective service when they turn 18 like men do

in the 50s, they kinda didn't have seat belts.

If I choose to smoke, I should be allowed to

Girls dieing- thats what you get for shoving broken glass up your ****** ****

young fit men are not forced into military

you should obey your parents, they only feed you, clothe you, shelter you

being patriotic is a good thing

I could cover a few of your points, like "The days before Health Warnings on Cigarettes and Alcohol". Do you imagine there was ever a time when reasonably intelligent people didn't know that either was dangerous in excess?

Corporal Punishment-You mean when kids actually listened and got an education, and didn't think it was okay to act like thugs in school.

Bullying was by most people always looked down upon. The difference was in 1955 my son could have defended himself against a bully, and not gotten in just as much trouble as the bully. Now,he has the choice of running or taking the beating if he doesn't want the same punishment for "fighting" if he defends himself. So you think that taking away the right to self defense was a good thing?

You do realize the only reason we still have Selective Service, and the chance of a Draft,is because of a Liberal, don't you? It was Jimmy Carter who brought back Selective Service, otherwise we wouldn't have it anymore.

PE-You mean the days before 30% of children were Obese?

Many of the things you list could be interpreted as good things by many people. It all depends on how you look at them. For instance. .. bullying as a right of passage could very well have been a good thing. It prepared kids for the inevitable bullying they would experience when they grew up and entered the workforce.

Oftentimes things are much deeper than the surface. Your examples are all too simplistic to really make the case.

I prefer to watch episodes of Happy Days and romanticize the past. . ..

Not all Americans think that.

Some that do are delusional.

Some that do really don't know what the 50s were like.

And there is the possibility that the 50s were good for those people. They might have been young and unaware of all that stuff you listed. It may have seemed like a simple, blissful time for them.

What makes you think that all Americans think that the 50's were such a wonderful time.

Watching too many Happy Days re-runs?

Most of the people on here, their parents hadn't even met yet.

You are wasting an awful lot of energy trying to convince the Americans that their country is terrible.

Perhaps your energies would be better served in your own country-it's not so hot either.

I just don't get you.

Every time change happens in a society, people always think back to the status quo because its what they are used to and what they feel comfortable with. Not all of what you said up there is true however, some is. And not all of us as a whole refer back to that time as the perfect time, usually when you hear that its an older person of that generation thats afraid of change and progress.

Nostalgia - it makes people see the past through rose-tinted glasses. It's incredibly easy to forget the bad bits...

It's the same reason many people in the UK look on the 1940s as some kind of "golden age"

Oh you mean:

Back in the days when ppl didnt go on shooting sprees because they got their poor widdle feewings hurt?

Back when you could actually leave your child unattended and not have it sexually molested.

Back when you didnt have to lock and bar your windows because your neighbor would steal anything not nailed down?

Back when every other child wasnt on ritalin or speaking to its psychologist and actually had an iota of respect for other ppl?

Back when ppl had a sense of duty and community and didnt have to be bribe to help ppl in their community?

yea horrible times.

And trying to take credit for civil rights is ridiculous, civil rights would have emereged with the society with or without weak ppl you elevate. There were no dumb entitlement loving hippes back when the emancipation proclimation was made. Its the enevitable progression of a free society. Something ppl like you are determined to destroy.

Baby Boomer nostalgia for lost youth and a Leave it to Beaver memory of the past that never existed
2010-04-13 09:39:13 UTC
Wow, your grandparents must've been hippies too if they told you this crap.

I can't tell which is funnier, the "when there were planes constantly patrolling the skies with nuclear bombs" or the "when all fit young men were forced to do military service" or even "when young girls stuck broken glass bottles up themselves". Bullsh*t.
