Is it really as simple as whether you wear a flag pin on your jacket or put your hand on your heart when the National Anthem is sung? After all, I'm pretty sure Bush does both... it seems to me that Patriotism is something different, and something that both Democrats and Republicans can have, despite what Republicans would like you to believe.... what do you think the true essence of Patriotism is and how do you know if someone is Patriotic/

A lie that serves the elite well, a fancy name for rabid nationalism that's easily exploited to rally the public against "enemies and threats" foreign and domestic

I like your question and I agree the flag pin should not be the determiner for Obama's patriotism, even though I tease him about it on this form a lot.

I'm sure if he was President, he would wear one in foreign nations and I have no doubt there will be the traditional US flag behind his podium when he gives speeches overseas.

However, the President should also remember that he does represent a nation and showing traditional patriotic respect (like hand over heart) at home is an important symbol when it come to our leaders.

Patriotism is your conviction that a country is superior to all others because you were born in it.

But in some essence it is a superstition artificially created and maintained through a network of lies and falsehoods; a superstition that robs man of his self-respect and dignity, and increases his arrogance and conceit.

From the way it is waved in others faces (especially those who have a differing opinion ) Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel and is the virtue of the vicious.

patriotism is not just place a flag on ur jacket and salute it is totally different from these things patriotism means respecting ur country from heart not by just singing national anthem .

Every social group has its own notions of loyalty. The institution of family embeds loyalty to the family as a social group. When a son and his wife and children separate from the rest of the family or when brothers divide their property, the neighborhood reacts with sorrow and not glee. Caste associations emphasize the benefits which come from an active participation and cooperation between different members of the same caste. Tribal groups, too, emphasize similar benefits from collaboration.

The notion of patriotism is different from such forms of group loyalty. The difference lies in its close affinity with the state. Patriotism is not based upon kinship or of shared descent like in families, castes and tribes. Patriotism is based upon the idea of a nation and its central institution, the state.

u cant say any 1who helps other person of his own country against other country citizen.when a person feels tht his country people r dying in the war for their country he should not just feel grief but evn help them and join the army not just to be patriot but to help the nation ................................

Patriotism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriotism

Defence of the fatherland is a commonplace of patriotism: The statue in the courtyard of École polytechnique, Paris, commemorating the students' involvement in defending France against the 1814 invasion of the Coalition.Patriotism denotes positive and supportive attitudes to a 'fatherland' (Latin patria < Greek patris, πατρίς), by individuals and groups. The 'fatherland' (or 'motherland') can be a region or a city, but patriotism usually applies to a nation and/or a nation-state. Patriotism covers such attitudes as: pride in its achievements and culture, the desire to preserve its character and the basis of the culture, and identification with other members of the nation. Patriotism is closely associated with nationalism, and the terms are often used synonymously. Strictly speaking, nationalism is an ideology - but it often promotes patriotic attitudes as desirable and appropriate. (Both nationalist political movements, and patriotic expression, may, yet need not, be negative towards other people's 'fatherland').

Patriotism has ethical connotations: it implies that the 'fatherland' (however defined) is a moral standard or moral value in itself. The expression my country right or wrong—perhaps a misquotation of the American naval officer Stephen Decatur, but also attributed to Carl Schurz—is the extreme form of this belief. Patriotism also implies that the individual should place the interests of the nation above their personal and group interests. In wartime, the sacrifice may extend to their own life. Death in battle for the fatherland is the archetype of extreme patriotism

Nationalism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationalism

Eugène Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, symbolizing French nationalism during the July Revolution 1830. Marianne is a symbol for France today.Nationalism is a term referring to doctrine[1] or political movement[2] that holds that a nation, usually defined in terms of ethnicity or culture, has the right to constitute an independent or autonomous political community based on a shared history and common destiny.[3] Most nationalists believe the borders of the state should be congruent with the borders of the nation.[4] However, recently nationalists have rejected the concept of "congruency" for sake of its reciprocal value. Contemporary nationalists would argue that the nation should be administered by a single state, not that a state should be governed by a single nation. Occasionally, nationalist efforts can be plagued by chauvinism or imperialism. These ex-nationalist efforts such as those propagated by fascist movements in the twentieth century, still hold the nationalist concept that nationality is the most important aspect of one's identity, while some of them have attempted to define the nation, inaccurately, in terms of race or genetics. Some contemporary nationalists reject the racist chauvinism of these groups, and remain confident that national identity supersedes biological attachment to an ethnic group.

Nationalism has had an enormous influence on Modern history, in which the nation-state has become the preferred form of societal organization, however, by no means dominant (i.e. France, Spain, Great Britain, none of which are nation-states). Historians use the term nationalism to refer to this historical transition and to the emergence and predominance of nationalist ideology. Nationalism is closely associated with patriotism.

Being a patriot is not simple anymore. Ever since Sept 11, it became patriotic to not question the president or the government. How stupid is that? Being a patriot means caring about the country. Not being a robot in it.

A patriot, in my book, is one that cares for his/her country. Without asking for anything in return. One that questions the government, for the love of his/her country. In America, a person that uses the constitution to exercise freedom of speech and not let anyone silence them. That's a patriot.

Patriotism is not a song or a pin with a flag on it. True patriotism is pride and support of your country and your people.

Patriotism to me is a poison, which makes people value one set of life higher than others. Patriotism to me is horrid making us value one are of mother nature than other. Patriotism doesn't show equality to me. Due to people's "patriotism" I know they'll not see this comment in a positive way. I am not a patriot and that what makes me proud.

Patriotism is not just the love of your country and what it represents, but the willingness to sacrifice for it.

You don't know untill you witness such sacrifice.

The flag flying over my home is to honor my country, not to show my patriotism.
