Question:
Why do Hindi migrants settled in Mumbai dont speak and adapt to Marathi?
2010-01-06 07:30:41 UTC
Hindi might be the official language of central govt. But Marathi is the language of maharashtra soil..
We dont care if migrants speak in Hindi among themselves..That is their wish..But atleast with the local maharashtrians they have to speak in Marathi..
We dont expect the migrants to immediately speak with the locals in Marathi when they come to Mumbai..Nobody can do that.. But atleast over the years when they settle they have to adapt to the local language and culture..Instead they are spreading their language here..

Now dont tell that fighting over language issue is silly..The language embodies the culture of the state

Because north Indians are generally more arrogant and try to force upon their behaviour and language upon the rest, until the resistance comes up.

Same as the US does not understand 'rest of the world', Hindi speakers don't understand the 'rest of India'.

usually , migrants adapt to a new place only if they are a minority .

mumbai is a cosmopolitan city where many communities live . so , no single community can be considered to be dominant .

therefore , in mumbai , the migrants continue with their traditions and language , since they dont have any compulsion to follow marathi ( for eg. if they find it difficult to buy stuff at a marathi store , due to language constraint , they can always go to another store where the shopkeeper understands their language . ). maybe they would start speaking in marathi if they migrated to a rural area in maharashtra .

anyway ,i agree that avoiding local customs is not a good thing . but , at the same time , the actions of goons like raj thakeray will only make non-marathis hate marathi language and traditions .

More importantly , unless learning marathi is shown to have some advantages , people wont be keen on it . For eg , throughout india , almost everyone wants to learn english , and to a slightly lesser extent , hindi . this is because both languages offer a lot of job opportunities ,etc . But , very few people wish to learn languages like bhojpuri /oriya /etc, which do not offer much .

I would like to say it is unfortunate.

Every body who migrates to other place should adopt to local culture, should respect local culture

( adopting to local culture does not mean leaving ur own culture or insulting ur language or something )

this goes for everybody not only north indians but for all people spread all over the globe.

If u migrate to place leave there as u can earn ur bread and butter, people did accept u for more than years to come as if u were one of them, I consider it is ur duty to respect their culture.

same goes for Indians who have settled abroad. If u don't respect local culture and try to impose ur culture on the locals the unfortunate incidences as occurred in Australia are bound to happen.

So open ur eyes, rectify ur self.

coming to point issue of less use of Marathi in Mumbai,

Tell me one thing how many people now send their children to English medium schools rather than schools which teach in local Languages, I agree learning english is need for time but it should be preferred as second or third language,

As per me Local language should be first language, Hindi should be second language, and english should be third language.( preference for first and second language can be mutually interchanged )

as per me adopting cosmopoliton culture does not mean that letting ur own culture threatened time and again.

Actually everyone in our country is equal. Many of this migrants understand Marathi but don't want to speak, so they shouldn't be forced. They themselves should voluntarily speak Marathi. I agree they should try to adapt to marathi culture and respect it and all should stay peacefully. What MNS is doing is spreading more haterate and dispute for votes, instead of resolving this issues.

Marathi speakers in Mumbai are about 40-45%, Gujarati speakers around 18-20%. While most of Gujaratis who are early migrants to mumbai have learned marathi over the period of time. Hindi migrants came recently (1970s onwards) and will require more time to adapt. Because of mixed population people either converse in English or Hindi or over the period of time learn Marathi. Some Marathi also learned Gujarati over the period of time. Marathi people learn Hindi in schools as per 'Three Language Formula' adopted nationally in 1950s. However same 'Three Language Formula' requiring Hindi-speaking states to teach 'Other regional languages' such as Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil etc. in schools was not yet implemented. Early and speedy implementation of 'Three Language Formula' in Hindi speaking states and in Tamilnadu will help in national integration.

In Mumbai, some Hindi speaking people have normally resisted to learn Marathi even after settling for 30-40 years while some others have completely accepted Marathi Language and assimilated in Local culture. Social Reforms in Hindi states about introduction to language of rest of India is required as correction.

well i m a big supporter of sena and mns...............for their son of soils issue but this one is a little stupid........like the marathi one as this language or rather it be any other language except hindi or english is of no economic use for the country....so if maharastrians have to deal with the ppl who are comin from different other states.....they have to use hindi or english..marathi wont work

first of all its a democracy and all people have right to freedom(as aforesaid).....

2ndly why dont marathis(and other people from different states) follow language and culture where they go--->simple its democracy.....right to freedom

3rdly......why to create fuss and disharmony over such issues...when country has so many big problems to fight....rather than fighting among ourselves we should fight the infidels that constantly carry on to create terror by taj hotel type attacks...

indians have long history of fighting amongselves and giving oppurtunities to enemy to excel......

man its high time....our generation should come out of such issues and work towards RISING AND SHINING INDIA
