Mexico looks like a dump compared to the U.S., but is actually very well off in comparison to world standards.

12 largest economy out of 195 countries in the world.

It even surpased the U.S. as the worlds most obese country.

So yes, Mexico is poor in the way that a middle class American is poor in comparison to Bill Gates.

It's all relative

The designation Third World doesn't mean what you seem to think it means. During the cold war that followed World War II, the world was split into two spheres of influence. The First World was the United States and its NATO allies in Europe and elsewhere. The Second World represented the Soviet bloc, its allies and satellite states, such as Cuba. Any country that didn't fit into either of those spheres was considered Third World. Mexico did avoid the first two designations, and that is what makes it Third World.

A more appropriate description of Mexico based on its economic situation is to call it an emerging market. http://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/090915/mexico-emerging-market-economy.asp

What makes Mexico an emerging market and not a fully developed or frontier market is based on several factors. There is a theory in economic history called the Great Divergence. The theory tries to explain the forces that drove some areas of the human world with notable scientific and technological advancements, while other areas of the world did not advance similarly. I found one analysis that seems to suggest Mexican wages were stagnant for long periods of time and that kept the nation back from economic advancement. http://scholarworks.bgsu.edu/hist_pub/8/

Mexico already is a "first world country." The term "third world country" originates from the Cold War era and refers to any nation that did not fall under the sphere of influence of the United States or the Soviet Union. Mexico has always been in the United States' sphere of influence.

First you'd have to remove the corruption that permeates every level of government. They're not going to go away without a fight. You can't even fight the drug cartels which are the source of most corruption because they have too much power.

All nations created by Spain, with a caste system in place, are disasters. Hard work doesn't count. You must be born into it.

Not a chance. They're almost entirely owned and operated by cartels now.

You obviously haven't been to Mexico. There's a lot of beauty and history there. Border towns to not represent all of Mexico.
