My husband and I are conservatives (religiously, financially, and politically). We both went to “Christian” colleges. I graduated summa *** laude, and went on to get my M.S. with a 4.o GPA. My husband’s career enables us to live quite comfortably (significantly above the level you gave), yet we live rather simply (maybe our house isn’t “crappy,” but it isn’t new) so that we can have money to give to CHARITY.
Now, let’s talk about these “poor people” who live in “crappy houses.” I grew up in such a “crappy house,"- a mobile home in fact. (Do you realize how insulting you’re being to the poor without meaning it?) We know some of the “poor people” that you’re talking about, and we also know a lot of people who are quite comfortable. You see, many conservative actually do quite well in business and financial fields, as well as in law or medicine. We tend to be rather serious folks, and we’re pretty good (in many cases) at handling money. Statistically, we conservatives also give quite a lot to charity. You see, Democrats often VOTE to give the PUBLIC’S money to charity, but conservatives often give their own.
You REALLY need to get out of your comfort zone and get to know some of “the poor.” You’ll find that there are aging farmers, hardworking welders, young couples just starting out, folks who are disabled, as well as those who’ve made some pretty bad life decisions and are reaping the consequences. There are a good many folks who may look “poor” on paper, but may have a decent house (although you might think it “crappy,” they’re proud of it), a nice garden, and a herd of cows or goats. Others became “poor” because of some type of catastrophe or serious illness. Some became “poor” voluntarily, such as the neo-homesteaders who often give up good careers to move back to the land.
But, why would a “poor” person vote Republican? Here are some reasons:
1. Because they believe that abortion is killing a baby.
2. Because they value independence and fear big government
3. Because they WORK HARD, and they resent their hard-earned money going to those who consistently make poor life-choices and to a bloated government where waste and corruption are rampant
4. Because they value morality, or they are pro-family
5. Because they believe that a strong military is necessary to our nation’s safety
6. Because they consider “welfare” a last-resort, and a disgrace
7. Because they value religion in their lives
8. Because they know that if a society has too many financial “takers” and not enough “givers,” that society will fail, and that too much “redistribution” may make the jobs-creators in our society just quit trying OR move their businesses elsewhere.
9. Because they are small business owners or small farmers who are increasingly being threatened by more and more and more burdensome regulations.
10. Because many of them were alive when Communism was at its peak, and they FEAR the oppression, starvation, and terror that it brought to the people.
There are probably other reasons; these are just some. Really, though, no matter if you’re a Democrat or a Republican or an Independent, you really need to get off the college campus and get to know the people you call "the poor." You also need to develop some respect for others, and learn to see things from different points of view. That is the mark of intelligence and a well-rounded person.
