It depends on where you stand. Cuba, at the time Castro and his rebels started fighting the US, was becoming the Las Vegas of the Caribbean--lots of ritzy hotels, golf courses, casinos, etc. run by the mob. Many of the people (at that time) who could to go down there were rich folks, or mob connected. The employers treated the locals, who were hired as the maids, waiters, janitors, cooks--all those type jobs--as less then human and paid them a wage that was often barely subsistence level, even for Cuba. The working people lived in poverty while those who sucked up to the mob and wealthy lived richly. No middle ground. Castrp and his followers felt this was unfair since all the money from the casinos, hotels, restaurants, golf courses and everything else was not staying in Cuba. None of it was going back to the Cuban people or the infrastructure of Cuba, or to schools or housing or anything else in Cuba. Whatever resources Cuba had was being reaped by the rich and the mob. So, Castro and his followers decided that needed to change and if that meant tossing out the rich Americans, so be it. To which the Americans forbid anyone from trading goods or selling goods to Cuba. Which is why Cuba turned to Russia; Russia was the only "big" country to offer to help them, to send them trade and goods--which also included war weapons because it was to Russia's advantage to have a base so close to their enemy, the USA. I personally think it was good for Cuba as a culture to cut themselves off as they did, to preserve what little culture of their own they still had. It has been rough on the people there but they seem to have made it through and have retained a lot of their own identity, and, hopefully now can prevent a US takeover. It'd be nice to be able to visit Cuba and learn about their people, their culture, enjoy their foods and music and dance knowing that the tourist dollars you spend will go back into the support of that country and maybe make it more equitable. Not everything that was done by Castro over the years was good, nothing anyone does ever is, but in the larger picture, he did a credible job of keeping Cuba Cuba, not just another playground for Americans.

I honestly don't know. Was he a good man that made bad decisions? Was he a good man with good intentions? Was he a good man that turned bad? Was he a good man in a bad situation? Was he a bad man spent on evil? Was he a selfish dictator? Peoples opinion of this man are based on news reports, history books etc but I've earned not to take everything the media says at face value. We as outsiders can only speculate and assume. I think he was a man with good intentions, who was put between a rock and a hard place and did what he thought best to survive, his actions are questionable his methods of control some atrocious but still he was just a man.

Fidel has a complicated personality and has played a complex political role both in Cuba and on the world stage. He's been good in some ways and bad in others, as some of his biographers have written.

He's held dictatorial powers in Cuba for a long time, and even some people on the left would say that he's sometimes abused his power -- functioning as a "Communist caudillo," as one Marxist critic put it.

On the other hand, he's also upheld Cuba's political independence for roughly the past 50 years, in the face of the massive power and the antagonistic attitude of the United States, the only global superpower in this hemisphere, and one that has historically used its considerable military and economic power to bully its smaller Latin neighbors.

For many Cubans and a number of other people in Latin America, I believe, Castro is seen as a hero for standing up to the Yanqui Colossus -- i.e. for standing up to us. I think some of those same people would say that Castro has made some big economic mistakes, but some of them are proud of the revolution he's led.

Depends on who you ask. Castro is no Mandela. But he has a lot of fans.

Ask that question about Abraham Lincoln and you can say he was good because he freed the slaves, or that he was bad because he caused an unnecessary civil war costing the lives of a million Americans, imprisoned "confederate sympathizers" without trial, refused repeated attempts by the CSA to make peace, and generally acted like a tyrant. And he didn't free the slaves. The 15th amendment did that after his death.

Castro is an excellent guy. Don't believe all the stupid things the American government has tried to make others believe. Castro did the best he could for his country, and Cuba was NOT the beautiful place the old exiles and the Americans portrait. Misery and hunger ruled the streets. Just do this math, before 1959 the population in Cuba was around 6 million ppl. Most of them with no home, no education at all. 15 years later the population almost doubled to 11 million people. Does that occur when people are struggling? The answer is no. But the situation in Cuba gets worse due to a tough embargo which increased over the years just to cause political benefits to the most powerful country in the world.

He is a bad guy......After the Soviet Union collapse,

former Soviet military leaders and the KGB said during

the Cuban Missile Crises, Castro wanted the USSR to

launch the nuclear missiles from Cuba into the USA.

Everyone in the Kremlin thought Castro demands

was insane.

He kept throwing people into prison that did not

agree with him...

A dictator but not a totalitarian one. The most credible estimates I've seen of deaths he caused were between 2,000 and 5,000, many of the dead themselves murderers and torturers under Batista. He also was allies with a deeply repressive gov't in Ethiopia, one with a high body count, that he sent Cuban troops to defend. Finally there were many deaths from people fleeing the nation in boats and drowning at sea.On the other side, Cuba is free of US control, something no one else in Latin America ever did successfully. He outlasted ten US presidents and perhaps the most assassination attempts in history. His troops also went to Angola, where they defeated a South African invasion and helped end apartheid.
2015-12-22 16:02:34 UTC
He's still alive lol. He's a good guy. Cuba is really the only place where the soviet style communism worked - you can see this with Cuba having the third highest score on the Human Development Index in the Americas after the US and Canada, and that's because Fidel Castro genuinely cares about the Cuban people.

Now I don't agree with his politics, but got to give this man credit, he survived possibly hundreds of assassination attempts by the US government.

He was good according to the average Cuban who still lives in Cuba. But to the elite Cubans, he was the devil because the did away with their wealth hoarding that they learned from American capitalist who Castro kicked out of Cuba for opening a ton of BROTHELS. The Average U.S. person doesn't care about Castro. Only ex-Cubans and the republican half of the U.S. gov hate him. Because they were so scared of Communism.

A good guy who freed the people of Cuba from a corrupt and brutal dictator. Under the pro-US puppet government the peasants were uneducated and impoverished and most of the land was owned by foreign gangsters and big businesses. Castro brought education for all, created jobs for the unemployed, and saved Cuba from an American invasion

Castro's government threw my Cuban grandfather into jail for 10 years for voicing his opinion. My dad's family was at a decent wealth, and when partially forced to refuge to America, they lost all of their money.

An oppressive and bad communist who tried to coordinate pointing an atomic weapon at the U.S. for the United Soviet Socialist Republic. No other description after you look at all the people who drowned trying to escape his regime in overloaded tiny boats or look at the U2 footage showing the build up to put a nuclear weapon in Cuba. Anyone who defends the actions of Castro either needs a basic education or a good whooping.

A common misconception is that you will have to be a financial and business expert in order to successfully trade binary options. However, this is not true at all. Learn here https://tr.im/MEIeQ

Perhaps it’s true when it comes to traditional stocks trading but definitely not true in the case of binaries. You don’t have to be an expert to predict the movement of certain assets.

eh depends. He was the communist dictator of cuba, and he worked with the Soviet Union to launch nuclear bombs onto U.S. because cuba is just south of Florida. Other than that, the people of cuba liked Castro at the time, but I guess it doesn't make you a good guy if you threaten anyone.

Yes & No. He was American educated. He did have some American backing for his revolution. Kenedey was very anti Mafia. Cuba was costing America a lot of money to support before the revolution. There are many sides to look at. Far to many for here. The cold war was going on. Cuban sugar, Labor rights, so many reasons.
